A 23-year-old Loyola student from Pakistan was shot and killed during an attempted robbery Friday night near campus, officials said.
Police said the man was with another person in the 1200 block of West Albion at 7:50 p.m. when two males walked up, showed a weapon and demanded his belongings, police said. At least one of the males opened fire, striking the man in his chest and head, police said.
The man, identified as Mutahir Rauf of the 1400 block of West Pratt, was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The student was walking with his brother when they were approached by the males and were shown the gun, 49th Ward alderman Joe Moore said in a post on EveryBlock.com. The student thought the weapon was fake and tried to reach for it, Moore said. He was later shot during a scuffle.
Rauf's brother was not hurt, according to authorities.
There are no suspects in custody as of 2 p.m. Saturday.
"We are shocked and saddened by the tragic and senseless event that took the life of one of our students," Jane Neufeld, vice president for student development, said in a statement. "This was a senseless act of violence, and one that has absolutely no place in civil society."
Rauf's fellow classmates at Loyola found out about the shooting through a campus crime alert system.
"Now our campus, our community is down one, and it's sad to think. I feel for their family and I know our community, we're all praying for their family," said Loyola student Warren Swartwout.
To honor Rauf's life, the university is planning a moment of silence Saturday night at the Madonna della Strada Chapel and a Walk of Remembrance following the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. The university is also inviting everyone to gather in the Mundelein Center Auditorium on Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. to pray together for nonviolence.
