Lightning Strike Critically Injures 12-Year-Old Boy

Boy was leaving school when bolt hit

A 12-year-old western Illinois boy is in critical condition after being struck by lightning as he left school.

Morrison, Ill., police Chief Brian Melton said the boy was struck as he left Morrison Southside School at about 2 p.m. Friday.

The boy is in critical condition at the burn unit of the University of Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City. That's the third hospital he's been in since Friday's accident.

He was initially taken to Morrison Community Hospital, then airlifted to Illini Hospital in Silvis.

The boy's family has asked that his name not be released.

Counselors and clergy will be available at the school on Monday.
