Lakeview Woman Wakes to Attempted Attack

A man tried to sexually assault a woman in her Lakeview apartment, police said

A frightening attempted sexual assault in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood has the area on alert.

A 25-year-old woman was woken up around 5 a.m. Thursday to find a man in her apartment in the 800 block of West Newport Avenue. Police said the man tried to sexually assault the woman, who screamed and woke up her 24-year-old roommate.

The man grabbed some personal items and fled.

Police said the suspect was described as a black man about 25 to 35 years old about 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-3 wearing a long-sleeve T-shirt and jeans. Because the "L" is nearby, police are investigating whether the suspect took public transportation.

"I hope it encourages people to take precautions, lock their doors and be safe," said Lakeview resident Liz Kramer. "I always worry about people in our neighborhood not calling when they see suspicious things happening."

The Guardian Angels were in the area Friday morning to hand out fliers alerting residents of the attempted attack and provide escorts.

"This individual need to be caught," said Miguel Fuentes of the Guardian Angels.

Anyone who saw a man fitting the description in the area of West Newport Avenue around 5 a.m. Thursday is asked to call Chicago Police.
