Man Shot While Driving Crashes Into Church

Church minimally damaged; services will be held

A man who was driving a van in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood died Saturday after being shot in the head and crashing into a nearby church.

Kevin Moore, 23, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

New Israelite Missionary Baptist Church had minimal damage when the van slow-rolled into the front of the church, Rev. Chenier A. Alston said Sunday morning. No one was in the church at the time, and no one was injured.

Around 6:15 p.m., the man was driving a van in the 7500 block of South Marshfield Avenue when he was shot in his head, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene and police could not provide further information.

Alston said Moore was not a member of the church and said the church was not targeted.

"It was just a random act of violence," Alston said, adding he will address the incident in the Sunday services.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Sunday.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
