Car Windows Smashed at West Suburban Kensington School

School officials say someone smashed several car windows in the parking lot of Kensington School of the Highlands in La Grange Monday, prompting several area schools to be put on lockdown.

Police were called to the 1900 block of 58th Place just before 12:30 p.m. for a report of a man smashing the windows of cars in the parking area around the preschool pick up and drop off times, Kesington Administration said in a note to parents.

Police said a 38-year-old man was taken into custody and at least 13 car windows were damaged.

"The children were never in danger, are unaware of what happened and are happily enjoying their day at school," school spokesperson Patty Sherman said in a note to parents.

The school's building was never approached, Sherman said.

Highlands District 106 Superintendent Patricia Viniard said in an email that students at nearby schools were kept inside of their classrooms for about 30 minutes on a soft lockdown while officials worked to detain the man.

Police said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
