An MRI on the injured left thumb of Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Báez has revealed a hairline fracture, the team said Saturday.

Báez has not appeared in a game since Sept. 1 due to the injury, and Saturday's setback could put the remainder of his season in jeopardy.

The shortstop will consult with a hand specialist on Monday to determine the next steps in treatment, and to determine how long he could remain out of action.

The Cubs are currently trailing the St. Louis Cardinals in the Central Division race, but are in position to earn a wild card spot for the second consecutive season.

Addison Russell will get the bulk of the work at shortstop during Báez's absence.
