Infant Killed in West Side Fire

A 2-month-old girl was found dead early Monday in a house fire on Chicago's West Side

An early morning house fire in Chicago's Austin neighborhood killed a 2-month-old girl, fire officials said.

Tiniya Coleman was found in a first-floor bedroom of 831 N. Laramie Ave. Firefighters responded to the fire around 2 a.m. and immediately found the little girl, District Chief Timothy Sampey said.

Tiniya died on the scene and was taken to West Suburban Hospital, Sampey said.

The fire was quickly struck out. Flames were mostly contained to the first floor, where the fire likely started. There was some minor damage to a neighboring house.

Tiniya's mother, Ashley Shields, remembers her daughter as a happy baby who smiled a lot.

"She's definitely a caring little baby," Shields said. "She was always laughing at people. She liked to sit up and look around."

The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were smoke detectors in the house, but they weren't working, according to fire officials.
