Illinois National Guard Soldiers Head to Afghanistan

Soldiers to work alongside members of the Polish military

The Illinois National Guard says about 20 soldiers from a specialized unit are getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan, where they'll work alongside members of the Polish military.

The members of the Bilateral Embedded Staff Team will spend two months training in New Jersey and Poland before heading to Afghanistan for six months.

The Guard calls the embedded mission "unique," saying in a statement Tuesday that it's part of a 20-year-long partnership with Poland's military.

Officials say the soldiers on the mission are from across Illinois. They'll be honored on Sept. 10 during a send-off ceremony in Bloomington.
