I-57 Reopened After Closing for Medical Helicopter

Following a car crash, interstate I-57 was closed to allow a medical helicopter to land

Interstate 57 is open again after a car crash requiring assistance from a medical helicopter closed the road in both directions to take one of the crash victims to the hospital.

The helicopter was called in after a 21-year-old male fell asleep at the wheel, driving off the northbound roadway near Kedzie Avenue. He struck a tree before finally coming to a stop against a high-voltage box.

The driver remained uninjured, but his passenger, an 18-year-old female had to be taken by helicopter to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

According to police, there were issues extracting the passenger, due to the vehicle's contact with the electrical box.
