Highway Driver Left Gun on Car Roof: Police

Called in by another driver

Occasionally, in the rush of our day, we'll pull out of our driveway with a purse or coffee cup still on the roof of the car.

But one Gary man made a similar -- but oh-so-much-bigger -- mistake when he allegedly left a gun on top of his 1997 Mercury, reports Chicago Breaking News.

Oops.

At about 5 a.m. this morning, a driver on Interstate 80 spotted a handgun on top of 29-year-old Dereck B. Gray II's car and called police.

How did a gun manage to stay on top of a car traveling at highway speeds? It's a good thing it did because the situation could have been much worse if it had fallen off.

Gray then pulled into a gas station off Ripley Street and stepped inside the store to purchase a few items, Indiana State Police told Chicago Breaking News.

Gray evidently didn't notice the .40-caliber semi-automatic until he walked back to his car, but by then, a state trooper noticed it too.

As a convicted felon, Grayisn't allowed to have a firearm. He explained to the officer that he kept it for protection, police said.

Gray was promptly arrested. Maybe he felt safer sitting in the back of a police car.
