Hendricks Shares Unique Connection to Cubs' Title Drought

Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks has drawn the task of trying to end the team’s century-long World Series drought on Wednesday night, as he will take the hill in Game 7 of the best-of-seven series against the Cleveland Indians.

Hendricks, who gave up no earned runs in his only start of the series thus far in Game 3, will have to face off against Indians ace Corey Kluber, who will be making his third start for Cleveland as he looks to end that team’s 68-year drought.

For the Cubs, it’s appropriate that Hendricks is pitching not only because he had the best ERA in all of baseball this year (making him only the fourth pitcher in big league history to lead the league in ERA and start a Game 7 in the World Series), but because his birthday has an eerie connection to the team’s championship drought.

The Cubs, who last won the World Series in 1908, have gone 108 years without a championship. Hendricks’ birthday is Dec. 7, 1989, and when you express that in a math equation, the sum should look familiar:

12 + 7 + 89 = 108

In a year full of potent omens and remarkable coincidences, this feels like an appropriate one to note in what will be the final game of the season in baseball. Should Hendricks help lead the Cubs to victory, he will go down in history, and his birthday matching the “108” total will be a very sweet icing on the cake.
