Chicago Cubs fans of an older vintage surely remember the famous calls of broadcaster Harry Caray, and it’s easy to think during this special time of what he would be saying as the team makes its way through the World Series.

In reality, there were few people more optimistic that the team would someday make the Fall Classic than Caray, who passed away before the 1998 season. As the 1992 season wrapped up, Caray delivered a message that would turn out to be one of the most memorable of his broadcasting career.

“(It’s) too bad we couldn’t have had a victory that meant a pennant,” Caray said shortly after the final pitch of the season had been thrown. “But that will come; sure as God made green apples. Some day the Chicago Cubs are going to be in the World Series.”

Caray would not live to see the Cubs make the Fall Classic, but in 2016 the team finally made it, and fans have made it a point to decorate his headstone at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines with apples to mark the occasion:

Naturally, the apples aren’t the only things that are decorating the gravesite. Fans have also put up a “W” flag next to the tombstone, along with a World Series program, a baseball and, naturally, a can of Budweiser for the legendary broadcaster.

Caray does have a family connection to this year’s World Series, as his grandson Chip is contributing to postgame coverage for Fox TV in Chicago.
