Zoo Celebrates Ape Milestone

JoJo the gorilla has lots to celebrate on his golden birthday

JoJo the gorilla is one wise ape.

The Lincoln Park primate is celebrating his golden birthday, turning 30 on April 30th.

The median life expectancy for male gorillas is 30 years, so JoJo making the big 3-0 is a big deal,  zoo officials say.

So what lead JoJo to reach such a milestone?  To no surprise, it was eating well and exercise that helped the gorilla make it to this grand old age. JoJo is hitting 30 with a new and improved fit physique. Thanks to his personal nutritionist and fitness trainers, he’s lost more than 50 pounds over the past couple years.

JoJo also shares his birthday with his female companion Tabibu who turns 18-years-old Friday.

The zoo celebrated the occasion by treating the gorillas to a multi-tiered piñata birthday cake filled with a gorilla’s favorite: fruits and veggies.
