Google's Doodle Honors Mies van der Rohe

His work in Chicago earned him an honorary street name in the Streeterville neighborhood

Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's left an indelible mark on Chicago with his minimalist, modern skyscrapers.

On Tuesday, he left an indelible mark on Google.

The search site used its Google Doodle -- the Google name that sits above the search bar on its crisp white page that often turns to artwork -- to honor Mies on the architect's birthday.

Designers selected Crown Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology for their inspiration, and injected the building, which is reminicient of a '50s drive-in, with color.

Van der Rohe was the head of architecture at IIT and designed many of its buildings and drafted the master plan for its campus.

His work in Chicago earned him an honorary street name in the Streeterville neighborhood, and a lasting legacy as a forward thinking architect.
