The parents of 7-year-old Giselle Zamago, the young girl who was shot on Halloween night in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, say it's "a miracle" that their daughter is alive.
Zamago was released from the hospital on Friday, after spending two weeks in the hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds she sustained while trick-or-treating.
The 7-year-old was wearing a Mickey Mouse costume when a teenage boy, who is purportedly a member of a gang, shot the young girl, intending to hit a rival gang member instead, according to prosecutors. The teenage suspect was charged with attempted murder for the shooting of Zamago and a second victim.
Giselle Zamago's mother, Delfina Lagunas, and father, Rigoberto Zamago, talked to NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago on Monday just before they went to attend a follow-up doctor's appointment with their daughter.
The young girl donned a smile on her face as her parents talked about the outpouring of support from the community.
"Thanks to all of everyone’s prayers," Lagunas said, translated from Spanish. "I am very grateful, my husband too. Thank God she is here with us."
Even though the suspect in Giselle's shooting remains behind bars, the young girl's parents pleaded for peace in the Little Village neighborhood following at least two other shootings in the last few weeks.
