Girl, 11, Among 6 Shot in Weekend Violence

At least six people were reported shot overnight in Chicago Sunday, including an 11-year-old girl sitting with her family on the porch of her Northwest Side apartment building and a 14-year-old boy killed while standing with a group on the city’s West Side.

Cindy Leon, 11, was sitting on her porch around 4 a.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of North Kostner Avenue when a shooter, who may have been a female, fired around five shots, striking the little girl in the back and side, officials said.

The girl suffered “through-and-through” wounds to her lower back and side and was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital where she was last listed in stable condition, police said.

"She's scared," said her stepfather Santiago Galvez. "It's never happened in our family, itis crazy."

Police said the shooter fled north on Kostner and was not in custody but that they did not have a good description of the offender.

The latest shooting took place around 5:30 a.m. Sunday when three people were shot in the 300 block of South Green Street, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.
A 22-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the right side of his body and was taken to Stroger hospital in serious condition, Estrada said.

A 20-year-old man was also transported after the shooting with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was last listed in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

A third victim, 21, drove himself to Mercy Hospital with a wound to his left forearm. He was last listed in good condition.

No further details were immediately available on the shooting, Estrada said.

Around 3 a.m., a 42-year-old man was shot in his garage in the 5600 block of South Sacramento Avenue.

The man was standing in his garage when he was approached by a man who pulled a gun and fired numerous times, striking him once in the left leg, Estrada said.

The gunman fled through an alley and no one was in custody Sunday morning.

The 42-year-old man was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, officials said.

On the city’s West Side, a 14-year-old boy was shot around 12:20 a.m. while standing group in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street, police said.

The teen was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was later pronounced dead, officials said.

Police said it was not clear if the teen was the intended target but that no one else was injured in the shooting.
