From Weddings to Grand Kids, Hurricane Florence Upsets Plans For Some Chicagoans

As Hurricane Florence intensifies and the East Coast braces for its looming landfall, some Chicagoans are already feeling in the effects of the massive storm.

Bride-to-be, Nashley Mattocks, is watching it closely.

"Everyone saying this is going to be the worst storm since Hugo," she told NBC 5 Tuesday.

After months planning her dream wedding in the North Carolina countryside—the former Chicagoan is moving her Saturday celebration to Knoxville.

"It kind of became a conversation of if we don’t make a call soon we’re not really going to have an option and there may not actually be a wedding," she said.

The move came as a relief to maid of honor Maggie Priore, here in Chicago, who was worried about travelling to Raleigh.

"Right before she texted me I was going to text her and be like--I don’t think I feel safe going," Priore said.

At O’Hare International Airport—some are rushing to get to the East Coast ahead of the storm.

Among them—Cindy Miller, who was travelling Tuesday to Richmond.

"I’ve got to get there for the birth of my second grandson," she explained.

As for Mattocks, she hopes that moving her wedding will keep her friends and family safe.

"Kind of feels like everything I imagined is a bit useless now because the details don’t matter quite as much," she said.

She and her bridal party are trying to take the new plans in stride.

"It’s not ideal for any girl to see their dream wedding get struck by a natural disaster so I feel awful for my friend, I hope it all turns out for her," Priore said.

A number of airlines are waiving change fees ahead of the storm, a small gesture to those, like Mattocks, impacted by the impending storm.

"We’ve been told our first born child has to be a Florence," Mattocks said. "But that will be a long, long, long time coming."
