Foundation Helps Chicago Students Have Dream Prom

Going to prom is a rite of passage for high school seniors, but it can be quite pricey – statistics show it's not unusual for a family to spend upwards of $900 on prom-related expenses.

“At first I wasn't planning on going to prom because I really didn't have money and I didn't know where to get any from,” says high school senior Iyonna Williams.

Luckily one of her school counselors referred her to the Edward Touhy Guardian Angel Foundation , which provides free prom dresses, accessories and shoes to those in need. This year the foundation expects to help 50 to 75 girls.

“We’ve provided grocery cards for them, clothing and legal assistance – besides playing fairy godmother for them to go to prom,” says the foundation’s director Mary Kay Touhy.

Mary Kay and her brother run the Edward Touhy Guardian Angel Foundation, which is named after their late father.

“He'd give you the shirt off his back so we are paying it forward and honoring our dad by trying to be half the human being he was,” Mary Kay said.
