Firefighters Escape Roof Collapse Unscathed

Dozens were inside when roof collapsed

Chicago firefighters escaped a partial roof collapse at an extra-alarm fire early Wednesday in a vacant West Garfield Park building.

Dozens of firefighters were inside at the time of the collapse, working to keep the fire in the vacant building at 4034 W. Wilcox St. from spreading.

The building is flanked by occupied greystone residences on both sides.

Both of those buildings were evacuated and empty at the time of the collapse.

The roof collapse comes on the same day a family filed a lawsuit against the owner of another vacant building where a Chicago firefighter died in a rool collapse last year.
