Blaze Erupts at Wilmette Woman's Club

No injuries were reported

A fire broke out at a woman's club in the northern suburb of Wilmette Tuesday morning.

Several suburban fire departments arrived at the scene at the Woman's Club of Wilmette, located at 930 Greenleaf Avenue, at about 9:45 a.m. to put out the blaze. The fire originated on the second floor of the building, and flames shot through the roof.

One person was inside the building when the fire broke out, but no injuries were reported.

As of 12:30 p.m. fire crews remained on the scene to continue putting out the fire.

ComEd temporarily suspended power in the neighborhood after a wall collapsed near power lines, but a spokesman for the electric company expected power to be restored by 4 p.m. Telephone and cable wires were also impacted.

While firefighters battled the blaze, streets near the women's club were temporarily closed. The street closures may impact end-of-day pick-up at Central School, which is located nearby.

The Woman's Club of Wilmette is a service organization that was founded in 1891 to enrich "the civic, educational and social service sectors of our community," according to the website. The club regularly hosts meetings for members of the club and is available to rent for other events and social functions.
