Teen Questioned in Cop's Death

Hester Scott was found dead in the basement of her home on the 8800 block of South Wallace Street

A 15-year-old boy is being questioned by police in connection with the death of an off-duty Chicago police officer.

Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said Saturday morning there were no charges, but detectives continue to question the teen.

The officer, identified as Hester Scott, was found in the basement of her home on the 8800 block of South Wallace Street. Chicago Police News Affairs classified the death as "domestic related".

Scott was killed shortly before noon in her home on the 8800 block of South Wallace Street, police said. Invesigators said they found an opened door when they got to the home.

According to a source with knowledge of the investigation, the teen is Scott's grandson. Police didn't confirm the relationship.

The woman’s neighbor, 92-year-old Wilbert Grant, said the victim moved to the neighborhood about 15 to 20 years ago and lived in the home with her grandchildren because her daughter was "having problems."

"I'm very surprised," Grant said. "She was a very nice lady."

The officer was reportedly on the force for close to 25 years and was thinking of retirement soon.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
