Father Receives Kidney From His Only Child

Local heart transplant coordinator donates kidney

Gina Ferguson knows a lot about transplants and transplant waiting lists.

Ferguson, 39, the heart transplant coordinator at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, understands the process but never imagined herself as the donor, she told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Then her father was diagnosed with kidney failure. Dennis Ferguson, 68, was put on the kidney donor list last year with 60,000 other people on it. There was a five-year wait.

Nearly a year later, doctors told Ferguson he needed an urgent transplant. That's when his daughter stepped in.

Gina Ferguson told the Sun-Times she was "at peace" with the idea from the beginning.

The surgery went off without a hitch, and both father and daughter said they knew it would be successful.
