Father of 4, Beloved Florist Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash in Chicago

A 64-year-old florist was struck and killed while crossing a street on Chicago's West Side over the weekend.

Alberto Zavala, owner of Zavala's Flower Shop on Fullerton Avenue, was identified as the victim of a hit-and-run crash in the 5200 block of West Fullerton Avenue.

The man was crossing the street just after 10 p.m. Sunday when he was struck by a white SUV traveling at a high rate of speed, according to police.

The white SUV then continued eastbound on Fullerton before turning northbound on Laramie as it fled the scene.

"It didn't stop, it just kept going," said witness Christopher Orengo. "Like it was going on the highway somewhere around 50 or 55... very fast, it just went zooming right by our car."

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

A side mirror was knocked off the vehicle that hit Zavala, and police are hoping the evidence may help them find the driver.

Neighbors, friends and family members described Zavala as a hardworking father of four and talaneted man who dedicated his life to his community. He owned his floral business for more than 25 years.

Police are still investigating.
