Falling Tree Injures Elderly Woman on South Side

A falling tree injured a woman in her 70s who was cleaning out her gutters Saturday morning in the Gresham neighborhood.

The tree fell over about 11:10 a.m., with a large chunk of it landing near 89th and Wallace Streets, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

A woman in her 70s was injured in the incident and taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park in good condition, Langford said.

Neighbors said the woman was out clearing her gutter when the tree snapped, and appeared to have landed on her legs.

Residents claim they have been trying to get a number of trees in the area cut down for years.

The tree also fell onto power lines, according to the fire department and Chicago Police News Affairs.
