Emington Mother “Lost Her Way”: Mourners

Sara McMeen's visitation and funeral were Wednesday

About 125 people attended the funeral of an Emington woman accused of killing her family over the weekend before taking her own life.

Visitation for Sara McMeen, 30, began at 10 a.m. at Hager Memorial Home, 201 W. Mazon Ave., in Dwight, an Illinois farming community located 75 minutes southwest of Chicago. Her funeral began at noon.

Those who knew McMeen said she was a good person who lost her way.

"The McMeen family are very faithful in their desire to love the Lord, and I'm just here to kind of support them in their loss," said one mourner.

But police still don't know what prompted the murder-suicide. Investigators say McMeen shot her three children and live-in boyfriend, Daniel Warren, 29, before taking her own life.

Warren was found inside the couple's rented home. McMeen and her three children -- 10-month-old Maggie Warren, 8-year-old Skyler Lemke and 7-year-old Ian Lemke -- were discovered in the backyard.

Authorities asked Monday for anyone who had recently spoken to McMeen or her boyfriend, but no one has come forward. Warren's mother, Wendy Warren, said Tuesday that McMeen appeared to be in good spirits a day before the shootings.

"It doesn't make sense, and I'll never be able to understand it or put the pieces together," she said.

Neighbors in Emington heard a first round of gunshots Friday afternoon, moments after 8-year-old Skyler Lemke and 7-year-old Ian Lemke came home from school on the last day before Christmas break. Several 911 calls were released Monday.

Visitation for Daniel Warren and Maggie Warren is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the same location.
