Emanuel Plans Trip to Rome For Cupich's Installation

Mayor Rahm Emanuel will be in Rome for the Installation of Cardinal elect Blase Cupich.

Emanuel had just seen Cupich at Wrigley Field for the Cub game Saturday, only hours before Cupich learned of the honor. Hours later the mayor called to congratulate him. Emanuel tells NBC 5 “he was sitting a couple seats ahead of me at the Wrigley, and I said – I just happen to say congratulations, he thought I knew, that’s how he thought of it Sunday morning, no I was just saying congratulations.”

Emanuel and his wife Amy Rule will not only travel to Rome, he's planning on finding benefactors to sponsor the trip for Chicago teens who attend Catholic schools who would not otherwise witness it all in person. He says “The Holy Father could have picked multiple, well Los Angeles, other cities. This is a statement of the impact, the Archbishop has already had in Chicago and I want to make sure that the kids who go to parochial schools see this elevation and experience it.”

The Chicago Archdiocese, longtime partners with the city—whether it's Catholic schools or social service programs – and the mayor wants to make sure that relationship continues to remain strong.

“We should celebrate what this means for the city of Chicago and celebrate both the Archbishop’s work but what it means for all of us,” he said.
