Elgin Man Charged with Strangling Death of 88-year-old Neighbor

An Elgin man has been charged with strangling his 88-year-old neighbor to death during a robbery in the northwest suburb.

Matthew L. Stoecklein, 55, was arrested late Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder, home invasion, and robbery, Elgin police announced Thursday morning.

John Poyer was found dead at his home in the 500 block of Hiawatha Drive about 6:15 p.m. Nov. 22 by family members who hadn’t heard from him in several days and went to check on him, according to a release issued by Elgin police.

An autopsy Monday determined that Poyer died from strangulation and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Stoecklein, who lived in a second-floor apartment in same building as Poyer, allegedly stranged Poyer during a robbery, police said.

Stoecklein is expected to appear in bond court Thursday.
