Elgin Community College Says Student Diagnosed With Measles

Before being diagnosed the student attended classes on campus and visited the library

One of the 10 reported cases of measles in Cook County is an Elgin Community College student, the school confirmed Tuesday evening.

Before being diagnosed the student, who is a resident of Cook County, attended classes in the campus’ A and B Buildings on Feb. 3 and Feb. 5, as well as visited the library on Feb. 3, school officials said.

"The school is working closely with the Kane County and Cook County Health Departments to ensure the health and safety of those who may have had contact with the student," ECC said in a statement.

Kane County health officials notified ECC of the exposure Monday afternoon. The school then notified all students and staff.

“It’s alarming,” Alex Prigge, a student ECC, told NBC Chicago. "Just hearing about it, it's kind of scary."

The Cook County Health Department said the student is associated with the KinderCare in Palatine that is at the center of last week's outbreak.

Only one confirmed case has not linked to the day care center, an adult who last month was the state's first confirmed diagnosis.

Health officials advise students, faculty, or staff who have not been vaccinated for measles, should contact their health care provider or the Kane County Health Department.
