Drowning Death of ISU Student Ruled Accidental

Investigators have concluded that the drowning of an 18-year-old Indiana State University freshman during a fraternity event in Illinois was accidental.

The Tribune-Star reports the Clark County, Illinois, sheriff's department reached the conclusion about the Oct. 23 death of Yiorgo Karnezis of Munster, Indiana. The department says the case is not being forwarded to the Clark County state's attorney.

The school has said that Karnezis apparently fell from a boat into a small pond during a Sigma Chi fraternity social event in the rural community of Dennison, Illinois. The Vigo County, Indiana, coroner earlier ruled his death was consistent with accidental drowning.

ISU told WISH-TV the school had suspended all operations of the Sigma Chi Fraternity as a protocol while the death was under investigation.

“The Indiana State University community is deeply saddened by the death of Yiorgo Karnezis. The death of a student affects the entire Sycamore family, and we as a community extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time,” said Willie L. Banks Jr., Ph.D., vice president for student affairs, in a statement from ISU.
