A Chicago police officer hanging onto the hood of a suspect's van after nearly being run over fired into the vehicle and wounded the driver.
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden says the incident took place on the city's West Side late yesterday morning.
The driver was hospitalized in critical condition. The officer had injuries to his foot.
