40 Cats, Dogs Found in Elmwood Park Home

Two people in Elmwood Park could face charges after officials found more than three dozen animals

What began as a call to put out a fire in suburban Elmwood Park quickly turned into an investigation into animal hoarding. Now charges are pending against two people.

Firefighters were called to a small fire in a home in the 1600 block of 76th Avenue in the near northwest suburb Wednesday evening, the Chicago Tribune reported.

That's when they noticed all the dogs and cats inside.

Cook County Animal Control investigated and seized 22 dogs and 21 cats. All the animals were taken to a shelter.

The pair arrested have not been identified. Officials say the investigation is ongoing.
