Doctor Charged in Overdose Deaths of 3 Indiana Patients

Dr. John Sturman overprescribed narcotic painkillers that resulted in the deaths

A doctor at a Veterans Affairs medical center in Illinois faces reckless homicide charges in the deaths of three Indiana patients.

The felony counts announced Friday by the Marion County prosecutor's office charge that Dr. John Sturman overprescribed narcotic painkillers that resulted in the deaths. The patients died in 2010 and 2011 while Sturman operated a clinic at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis. He lost his admitting privileges in 2012 over inadequate record keeping.

The prosecutor's office says Sturman was jailed in Danville, Illinois, pending extradition to Indianapolis.

A VA spokesman says Sturman has worked at the VA Iliana Healthcare System in Danville since April and that it's cooperating with investigators.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Sturman has an attorney. Sturman also faces 16 counts of improperly prescribing drugs.
