Body Recovered From Lake Michigan Near Lake Forest

Police received multiple calls about a swimmer in distress

A body has been recovered from Lake Michigan in north suburban Lake Forest, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed.

The Coast Guard said they responded Thursday to a report of a female in the water in the 500 block of Forest Park Drive. The guard's station in Wilmette was on the scene along with fire departments from more than 20 towns.

Lake Forest Deputy Chief Karl Walldorf said there were multiple calls about a swimmer in distress sometime after 8 a.m.

The body of a woman in her 30s or 40s was recovered about 100 yards from shore around 11 a.m.

At one time as many as six boats and a number of divers and specialists from more than 25 fire and rescue operations were in and around the water searching for the person. Two coast guard rescue helicopters coordinated the search from the air.

Andrew Wells and his children visit this beach often and he says the area is popular despite the no swimming signs.

I am surprised someone would decide to go swimming in the lake water this time of year, it's got to be 40 degrees or so and I just find it hard to believe someone would go in the water," Wells said.

Authorities are working to identify the deceased.
