Dad Tries to Crawl Away from Police, Owes Thousands in Child Support

A man who authorities say owes more than $75,000 in child support couldn't escape being arrested, despite trying to crawl down the basement stairs.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says officers found Steven Jones at an address in the Chicago suburb of Maywood.

Officers went to the building after learning Jones worked as a tax preparer there. Dart says when officers arrived Jones spotted them. He says officers then saw the 36-year-old drop to the floor and crawl downstairs.

Officers eventually forced entry and found Jones in the basement.

Dart says Jones owes $76,228 in past-due child support. He appeared in court Friday and was released on his own recognizance.

Jones is charged with failing to pay child support and obstruction of justice. He couldn't be reached for comment.
