DCFS Investigating Death of 5-Month-Old Baby in South Suburb

The state Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the death of a 5-month-old girl Wednesday in south suburban Harvey.

The baby girl died at 7:17 a.m. Wednesday at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Thursday did not rule on her cause and manner of death, with results pending further investigation.

DCFS is investigating the girl’s mother for an allegation of neglect, an agency spokeswoman said. Two siblings have been taken out of the home and put in foster care as the investigation is pending.

The agency has had prior contact with the family. The baby’s father was indicated for an allegation of neglect on May 18, and the girl has been in the care of her mother ever since, according to DCFS.

A spokesman for the city of Harvey did not immediately respond to a request for information Thursday.
