Cubs Sign Relief Pitcher Joe Nathan to 1-Year Deal

The Chicago Cubs don’t have many weaknesses on their roster, but they purchased a key insurance policy on Tuesday as they signed relief pitcher Joe Nathan to a one-year contract.

Nathan, who underwent Tommy John surgery last April, was placed on the 60-day disabled list as part of his recovery program from the procedure.

Nathan last pitched for the Detroit Tigers, making one appearance with the team during the 2015 season. In his two years with the Tigers, he registered a 4.78 ERA with a 1.53 WHIP and 36 saves to his credit. He has made six All-Star teams in his career, with his last appearance in the Midsummer Classic coming during the 2013 season with the Texas Rangers.

If Nathan can fully recover from his surgery, the Cubs will hope that he can become the latest in a long line of successful reclamation projects in their bullpen. The highest-profile success stories in the past year have been Trevor Cahill, who has quickly become a sharp long reliever and solid right-handed option for the Cubs, and Clayton Richard, who was a left-handed setup man in the 2015 campaign.
