The Chicago Cubs have made all sorts of history this season, but if they beat the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, they’ll set yet another major league record.

A win would be the Cubs’ 94th of the season, but it would also come with an interesting bit of history. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Cubs are tied with the 1978 Milwaukee Brewers and the 2002 Seattle Mariners for the most wins ever accumulated by a team that is in third place in their division.

One more win would give the Cubs the record on their own, and it is a reflection not only of their skill but also of the talent in the loaded NL Central.

The St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up the division title with their 100th win of the season on Wednesday night, beating the second-place Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates currently sit at 96 wins on the season and hold a two and a half game lead over the Cubs.

The Cubs could still overtake the Pirates for the top wild card spot in the National League, but it would take some help from the Reds. If the two teams end up tied at the end of the regular season, the Cubs would get the top wild card seed and host the one-game wild card playoff at Wrigley Field next week.
