Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is calling a new aggressive effort to confiscate illegal guns a success.

The department has confiscated 83 guns over the past seven weeks, including four assault weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

The Gun Suppression Unit targets individuals who possess guns illegally, and confiscates Firearm Owners Identification Cards from those who've had their privileges revoked under state and federal law, usually for committing a felony.

More than 100 FOID cards have been retrieved over the same period of time. Officials believe nearly 4,000 revoked FOID card holders have not returned their cards in Cook County alone.
