Cook County Settles Burge Torture Case

County paid $600,000 to a man who says police officers working under Jon Burge tortured him into confessing to a murder

Cook County has paid $600,000 to settle a lawsuit leveled by a prison inmate who says he was tortured into a confession under former police commander Jon Burge.

Michael Tillman spent 23 years in prison for a 1986 rape and murder case before he was freed.

Cook County commissioners agreed to the settlement Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune. That means the county is no longer a defendant in the case.

Tillman still has a civil suit pending against the city of Chicago, Burge, other officers and former Mayor Richard Daley.

Daley will be deposed in the suit in July. The city is paying for his defense.
