The Cook County inmate jumped into the hole and became trapped

A Cook County Jail inmate is being taken to the hospital after firefighters rescued him from a hole he jumped into Saturday afternoon.

Fire emergency crews were called to 2715 S. Sacramento Ave. in the Little Village neighborhood around 2:20 p.m. and conducted a "trench rescue" to bring the person above ground, Fire Media Affairs said.

The inmate who had jumped into the hole became trapped in soft ground, according to Fire Media.

After firefighters rescued the inmate, he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with "minor complaints," according to a Fire Media update.

It was not immediately clear why the inmate jumped into the hole.

No further details were available and police were not able to comment.
