Prairie Grove Teachers Strike, Classes in Crystal Lake Canceled

Teachers and the board met for six hours on Thursday, but failed to reach and agreement

Classes are cancelled Friday for students in Prairie Grove School District 46, after teachers went on strike.

The teachers' union announced the strike Friday morning after both sides met for six hours with the federal mediator Thursday, but were unable to reach an agreement.

"Although the Board has imposed its last best and final offer, the parties have worked diligently to reach an agreement," said Assistant Superintendent Lynett Zimmer in a statement released early Friday, she works in Freemont School District 79.

The board and the teachers negotiations teams met for six hours with the federal mediator Thursday, but were unable to reach an agreement, Zimmer said.

The YMCA in Crystal Lake is offering daycare alternatives for families with children affected by the strike.

Another mediation session is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday. The public is invited to observe the process, but not participate.
