Shots Fired on Chicago's West Side, Child Injured Running for Cover: Police

A young boy suffered an injury to his hand while running for cover Wednesday evening after shots were fired in his direction on Chicago's West Side, according to police.

The incident occurred in the 1500 block of S Trumbull Ave in the city's Lawndale neighborhood around 7 p.m, police said.

The 6-year-old child suffered a "small laceration" on his finger after an offender in a light-colored SUV exited the vehicle and fired shots in the boy's direction, according to police. Authorities say he was not shot, but was treated and released on the scene, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

The suspect fled in an unknown direction, and no one is in custody as police continue to investigate.
