Chicago Pizza Better Than New York's, NYC Mayor's Spokesman Says

He ate it with a fork.

A Chicago pizza joint has the “best pizza in the United States,” a spokesman for, uh, the mayor of New York City announced.

To Chicagoans, it might come as no surprise that Eric Phillips, who identifies on Twitter as a Wisconsin Badger, was talking specifically about Pequod's Pizza.

Asked by a follower why Phillips felt it necessary to publically declare the unexpected endorsement, he responded simply: “because I like Chicago pizza.”

“NYC has a lot of great pizza. But I prefer Chicago-style. I don’t think anyone cares what type of pizza the mayor’s press secretary likes,” he said. “I think they care more about someone not being a phony. Especially about pizza!”

“Pequod’s char is the key,” he added in a follow-up tweet.

Many Chicagoans would agree, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel who also chimed in with a tweet of his own.

“Confirming what everyone already knew,” the mayor said. “Sorry, @NYCMayor.”

New Yorkers at home and abroad flooded Phillips’ tweet with callous dismissals of Chicago-style pizza as “cheese casserole.”

But the mayoral flak didn’t get crusty about it.

“I’ve lived in NYC for 12+ years. The flat, foldable, salt-less pizza is fine,” Phillips replied. “I eat a lot of it. But it’s not as good as Chicago pizza. It’s like salisbury steak vs. actual steak. Sorry.”

The saucy retort gained him praise from Chicagoans and Chicago-style pizza.

“Pequod's is genius and frankly so are you for recognizing that fact,” one user tweeted.

Although, he did say he ate it with a fork. That raised a few eyebrows on both sides of the pizza divide.
