Chicago’s official Christmas tree is moving from Daley Plaza this year, city officials announced Tuesday.
The holiday display will instead be placed in the city’s Millennium Park for the first time.
The tree lighting ceremony is scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 at the corner of Washington and Michigan.
It’s not the first time the tree has made its holiday home in a new location in the city.
According to the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events the city’s first official Christmas Tree was lit by Mayor Carter Harrison in 1913 in Grant Park at Monroe St. and Michigan Ave.
From 1913 to 1965, Chicago’s official Christmas Tree stood in different locations in Grant Park. In 1966, the tree was moved to Daley Plaza where it has been for the last 48 years with one exception: in 1982 the tree was moved to State St. and Wacker Dr. but returned to Daley Plaza the following year, according to the DCASE.
The annual Christkindlmarket will remain in Daley Plaza from Nov. 20 through Dec. 24.

The city is accepting nominations through Oct. 26 for spruce or fir trees that are at least 55 feet tall and within 100 miles from Chicago. Candidates can be submitted via email at DCASE@Cityofchicago.org.
