Chicago Woman Pleads For Brother's Release From Vietnamese Custody

Will Nguyen’s sister and family members have not been able to speak with him since he was arrested 10 days ago in Vietnam.

She says her brother has a head injury that needs attention and he does not have access to an attorney. Now, she’s asking for President Donald Trump to intervene.

Disturbing video shows the American student--blood streaming from his head--dragged by police officers through a street in Ho Chi Minh City.

"Nobody should be treated like that--it is very upsetting," Will's sister Victoria Nguyen, who lives in Chicago, told NBC 5 in an interview Wednesday.

She says the brutal video is the last time she’s seen her brother.

"I don’t know how he is doing or what is happening," she said. "Government--you never know with them."

Will Nguyen graduated from Yale. He’s expected to get his master’s degree from the Unviveristy of Singapore next month.

During a trip to Vietnam, his sister says, he decided to take part in what he thought would be a peaceful demonstration against proposed special economic zones.

Victoria says it’s unclear what her brother’s being charged with.

"This is typical behavior for them," she said of the Vietnamese police. "They don’t live by laws of the land."

Now she’s on a mission to get him released. She’s gone to d-c to meet with lawmakers. One has even tweeted calling for her brother’s release.

"Once I took it to Congress (it was) full speed ahead," she said.

It’s been a long 10 days, Victoria says. But she knows her brother is strong and that’s what she keeps focusing on.

"There has to be a solution for this and that is his release," she said.

Victoria says she met with more than 20 Congressman and Senators who have written letters on Will’s behalf.

She says the next step is for those lawmakers to sit down with the president and secretary of state.

She hopes that happens soon, she said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family.
