7 Dead, 36 Wounded in Thanksgiving Weekend Shootings

Seven people are dead and at least 36 more have been wounded in shootings across Chicago over Thanksgiving holiday weekend. 

Seven of those shootings happened on Thanksgiving alone and four fatal shootings were reported on Friday, authorities said.

The first fatal shooting of Thanksgiving took place just after 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the 7100 block of South Hermitage. Police said a 38-year-old man was shot in the head while driving a vehicle through an alley. 

According to authorities, the man and a woman, who was a passenger in the car, were traveling southbound through the alley when they saw three men. The driver exchanged words with the men and moments later one of them pulled out a gun and shot him, authorities said. 

The woman was able to get out of the car and flee the scene unscathed. Police said she was not cooperating with investigating officers, however. 

A second deadly shooting happened just before 1:30 a.m. Friday. A 27-year-old man was shot and killed during an attempted robbery in the 7500 block of St. Lawrence. The man, who was sitting in a car, refused to cooperate when a man demanded money from him, and he was shot under the left armpit. 

He was later pronounced dead at University of Chicago Hospital.

Hours later, a 22-year-old man was fatally shot in the 10000 block of South Avenue M. Few details have been released on what happened, but police say the man was shot in his body and was treated at the scene in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, officials said.

Just after 5 p.m. Friday, a 23-year-old man was shot and killed while standing in the 1500 block of South Ridgeway. Police said the man was standing on the block when another man walked up to him and shot him in the head. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

About three hours later, a 22-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 6400 block of South Calumet. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Hospital, according to police. 

Another fatality occurred on Sunday morning in the 200 block of North Lockwood, according to police. An 18-year-old man was killed when another man walked up to him and shot him multiple times. He was later pronounced dead at Loretto Hospital. 

The most recent fatal shooting took place Sunday evening when two people were shot in the 2600 block of West 63rd Street. Police said the two men were standing on a street corner when they were approached by three men who opened fire in their direction. One man, believed to be between 18 and 21 years old, was shot in the chest and a second man, 27 years old, was shot in the stomach. Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where the man shot in the chest was pronounced dead and the 27-year-old was listed in critical condition. 

At least 35 others were wounded in shootings over the long holiday weekend. 

WEDNESDAY

  • A 27-year-old man was shot in the left leg after someone in a red pickup truck opened fire on him while he drove in a vehicle in the 4300 block of West Wrightwood. Police said the man was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in stable condition.
  • A 19-year-old man was shot in the thigh when two people walked up to him around 7 p.m. in the 500 block of North Lavergne. The teen told police the gunmen fled in a red-colored van. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

THURSDAY

  • A 31-year-old man was shot in the leg while walking just after 1 a.m. on the sidewalk on the city’s South Side. Police said the man was walking in the 7100 block of South Hermitage when someone in all black clothing emerged from a gangway and opened fire. The man was treated at Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition had stabilized as of Friday morning.
  • About three hours later, a shooting closed down outbound Interstate 290 between Ashland and California Avenues. Police said one man was injured and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with non-life threatening injures. A bullet hole could be seen in a car with its windows also shot out. 
  • Just after noon, a 23-year-old man was shot on the sidewalk in the 1800 block of West Maypole. Police said the man was standing in the area when someone opened fire from a vehicle and shot him in the left leg. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition.
  • About 3:45 p.m., police said a 22-year-old man was shot in the chest by a security guard in the 300 block of East 47th Street. Authorities did not say what led to the shooting, but the man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
  • A 24-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen and took herself to Mercy Hospital after being shot at 5 p.m. while driving in the 4500 block of South King Drive. The woman was driving northbound on King Drive when she said someone in a dark-colored sedan with tinted windows pulled up and began firing shots at her. Police said Area Central detectives were investigating.
  • Five hours later, another 24-year-old woman was shot in the 4700 block of West Warwick. Police said the woman was with a group of acquaintances who were standing on the sidewalk when they became involved in a verbal altercation with three other people. Police said one of those people pulled out a gun and began firing at the group. The friends at the scene would not cooperate with police, authorities said.

FRIDAY 

  • In the 1100 block of North Mason Avenue, a 22-year-old man was shot in the hand at approximately 6:53 p.m. Police say he was walking down a street when another man pulled out a gun and shot him. He was taken to West Suburban Hospital in good condition. 
  • In the 5000 block of South Wood, a 16-year-old boy was shot at approximately 8:12 p.m. He was walking when he heard shots and felt pain in his finger. He was taken to Stroger in stable condition with a graze wound, according to authorities. 
  • A 26-year-old man was shot while walking through an alley in the 1000 block of North Austin, according to police. He was taken to West Suburban in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his left leg. 
  • A 31-year-old man was shot in the head in the 6600 block of Green Street at approximately 8:47 p.m. He was taken to Stroger in critical condition after witnesses say he was shot by an unknown man. 
  • A group of men fired shots at another group in the 3500 block of West Franklin at approximately 9:50 p.m. Three 16-year-old boys were shot, and all three are in stable condition, according to police. 
SATURDAY: 
  • Three people were shot after a person in a black SUV opened fire on them in the 4100 block of West Madison at approximately 2:28 a.m. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg, a 20-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, and a 19-year-old man was shot in the lower back. All three were taken to Stroger in stable condition, police said. 
  • During an altercation in the 6100 block of South Rockwell at approximately 3:53 a.m., a 58-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to police. He was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition. 
  • Two men were shot in the 1200 block of South Independence at approximately 8:06 a.m. A 29-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition, while a 20-year-old man was shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Two men fled the scene, according to police. 
  • A 21-year-old man was shot while standing in the 200 block of North Pine at noon. A vehicle pulled up and an occupant opened fire, striking him in the thigh. He was taken to West Suburban in good condition, police said. 
  • A 42-year-old man was walking in the 1500 block of South Ridgeway when a person fired shots at him, striking him in the left foot. He was taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition, according to police. 
  • A 25-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition after being shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting. He was standing in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove when a vehicle pulled up and a person inside opened fire, police said. 
  • A 24-year-old man is in serious condition after being shot multiple times in the 2700 block of South Tripp. A group of men exited an SUV near where the victim was walking, and they opened fire, striking him in the buttocks, shoulder, and lower back. 
  • A 32-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and abdomen while standing in the 3000 block of West Arthington at approximately 9:20 p.m. He was listed in serious condition at Mt. Sinai, according to police. 
  • A 25-year-old man was shot while walking in the 3000 block of South Halsted, according to police. A black pick-up pulled up to the man and an occupant opened fire, striking him in the buttocks. He was listed in stable condition at Stroger Hospital. 
  • A 20-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 9700 block of South Greenwood at approximately 10:20 p.m. when he was shot by a person in a black sedan. He was taken to Trinity in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his hip, police said. 
SUNDAY: 
  • A 29-year-old is in serious condition after being shot by a man in the 6200 block of South Seeley around 7:34 a.m. He was taken to Christ Hospital in serious condition after the shooting, police said. 
  • A 29-year-old man was shot in the back just after 8:30 p.m. in the 6800 block of South Paxton, police said. He told authorities he "heard shots and felt pain." The man was taken by ambulance to University of Chicago Hospital where he was listed in stable condition. 
  • At about 9 p.m., two people were shot in the 7900 block of South Drexel. A 22-year-old man was suffered graze wounds to the right leg and right arm and took himself to Trinity Hospital in good condition. A 24-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the left hand and was transported to University of Chicago Hospital. Police said both were being uncooperative in the investigation. 
  • Just before 10 p.m., police said a 19-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 600 block of North Sawyer. The teen was walking on the sidewalk when someone walked up and robbed him before firing multiple shots in his direction. The gunman took the teen's wallet, police said. The victim was last listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. 
  • A 17-year-old boy was shot just after 11 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Aberdeen Sunday. The teen was on the sidewalk when he said another man walked up to him and shot him, according to authorities. He suffered wounds to his right hand and right foot and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, police said.
