Work crews moved out excess furniture and other unusued items crowding closet and storage areas inside Mollison School Tuesday night as the Chicago Public School prepares to tackle a rodent problem.
"I mean this is where rodents fester," Cathy Dale, a community member, told NBC 5.
Seventh-grader Micah Vera will never forget his close encounter at the Bronzeville elementary school.
"I saw it out of the corner of my eye," he said. "It was big and it started racing across the floor."
And because the problem was still not fully resolved by the time school let out Tuesday parents frustration reached a fever pitch.
"This is the games they play, CPS," said parent Yolanda Redman.
CPS did pledge to spend the Thanksgiving break making the problem disappear with a thorough cleaning.

"CPS to their credit did some of that," said Ald. Pat Dowell.
But the cleaning was not thorough when so Dowell walked through with health inspectors Monday morning.
"It was clear they hadn't sanitized or cleaned certain areas," she said.
The school failed the health inspection. No cafeteria hot lunch can be distributed until another scrubbing from a new crew.
Ald. Dowell confirms a renewed cleaning effort began overnight.
"I live across from the school and I was watching them last night," she said. "They were in there til about 8 or 9 o'clock cleaning."
