Bucktown School Honors Tucson Victim

Chicago International School holds assembly, donates funds to commemorate life of Christina Taylor Green

It happened hundreds of miles away, but the Arizona shootings hit home for some students at a Chicago school.

"Our student council was deeply saddened to hear about the tragic events that occurred in Tucson," said a representative from the Chicago International School in Bucktown.

C.I.S officials say they were especially touched by the death of the youngest victim of the Tucson shootings, Christina Taylor Green. One school administrator is best friends with Christina's uncle and a teacher used to work at Mesa Verde Elementary School, where Christina attended, a school representative said.

"Our students decided to come together to support Christina's family," the representative said.

Today, students and staff decided to have "Christina day" at their school, which means a full day of red, white and blue. As part of the day's activities, the school organized a ceremony this morning to commemorate the life of Christina and her passion for politics and the country.

As part of the assembly, students will sing songs such as "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and will be recorded as they chant "We can't hide our Mesa Verde pride!" to send to the Mesa Verde Elementary School in sign of support.

The students will be making a donation for a scholarship fund already set up in Christina's name.
