Chicago Ranked 6th Most Expensive U.S. Summer Getaway

Survey finds the most and least expensive summer travel destinations

Visiting a big city this summer? It can get pretty expensive depending on where you go, according to a new TripAdvisor survey.

If you're traveling between June and August and want to splurge, San Francisco ranks the most expensive U.S. city to visit, followed by New York City, Boston, Seattle and Honolulu. Chicago ranks sixth most expensive.

TripAdvisor determined the average cost of an overnight trip in each city by factoring in the cost of a hotel stay at a minimum four-star hotel, cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of house wine and round-trip taxi fares.

San Francisco's cost totaled $507.75, and New York City's clocked in at $501.16. TripAdvisor totaled Chicago's cost at $422.83, down from last summer.

Looking to save? The least expensive cities to visit during the summer months are: Las Vegas, Miami, Atlanta, Orlando and New Orleans.

TripAdvisor found hotel prices decreased in some major U.S. cities by 6 percent for an average overnight stay. Cities around the Pacific Northwest have seen surges, it found, but room rates in warm-weather spots such as Orlando and Honolulu, significantly dropped.

“Travelers are eager to get out and explore this summer," TripAdvisor spokeswoman Brooke Ferencsik said, "and with hotel prices in major U.S. and global cities down six and seven percent, respectively, travelers will be able to find more affordable stays and dedicate a bigger chunk of their budgets to meals and entertainment."

The most expensive cities to visit outside the U.S. are London, Paris, Stockholm, Oslo and Zurich. The least expensive are Hanoi, Vietnam; Jakarta, Indonesia; Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt; Bangkok, Thailand; and Sofia, Bulgaria.
