Chicago Mayor Candidates Talk Taxes, Pensions in Debate

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and three of his challengers debated Wednesday during a WTTW event

The candidates for Chicago mayor are going head to head over how to fix the city's finances and address the underfunded pension systems.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and three of his challengers debated Wednesday during a WTTW event.

They disagreed over ways to bring in more revenue.

Emanuel hasn't ruled out a property tax, stressing he hasn't raised them yet in his first term. Three other candidates say they don't like the idea of a property tax.

Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia says he'd review tax-increment financing in the city. Alderman Bob Fioretti says he'd consider other options, such as a commuter tax. Businessman Willie Wilson says the city could see a boost from a casino.

The election is Feb. 24.

Candidate William Walls is also on the ballot.
